Shawn Michaels bagged 2 awards at PWTorch 2008 Year-end Awards. He won WWE Match of the Year for Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair at WrestleMania 24 and Best Feud of the Year on the Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho.
Also, PWTorch assistant editor James Caldwell makes his picks for each of the Torch year-end voting categories in 2008.
Best Wrestler: Shawn Michaels. Michaels tore down the house on multiple occasions, including an epic ladder match against Chris Jericho at the No Mercy PPV. Michaels was put in a position to use his great acting and verbal skills to keep himself on TV, which allowed him to conserve his body for big-money match-ups instead of being thrown into meaningless TV matches. When it was time to flip the switch in the ring, Michaels was terrific working WWE's style of main event storytelling.
Best Babyface: Shawn Michaels. Michaels was simply on a different level compared to everyone else in wrestling from a fan favorite perspective. Michaels's ability to tell stories with his facial expressions and subtle words in the program with Chris Jericho meant more than eight five-star matches or a yell-and-scream promo. He simply discovered the best way to conserve his body, and along the way, helped carry the Raw brand through some tricky waters of really poor TV writing outside of his program with Chris Jericho.
Best Feud: Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho. Enough has been said already, but this feud carried the Raw brand, delivered great PPV matches, and featured on-another-level TV storytelling. There simply wasn't a better TV feud this year. After Michaels vs. Jericho, there's a huge-drop off to other potential top feuds of the year.
Best TV Series: WWE Raw. Remove the Michaels vs. Jericho feud from the program and Raw is at the bottom of the list. While the rest of the show was playing at a very poor level from the end of spring to the beginning of fall, Michaels and Jericho were on a completely different level delivering great TV each week. The first stage of the Flair retirement, the second stage of Michaels vs. Jericho made for a consistently great year at the top of the show.
Best PPV/Event: WrestleMania 24. The legend of the Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels retirement match for Flair is what continues to grow beyond the actual match itself. The following night on Raw, then the subsequent Michaels-Chris Jericho program increased the legend of this match, which was the story of WrestleMania 24.
And lastly, WWE star Rey Mysterio recently interviewed by Kevin Eck of Baltimore's Sun - Ring Post and mentions Shawn Michaels' might role on tonight's Royal Rumble.
What are your thoughts on Sunday’s Royal Rumble?
Rey Mysterio: I’m definitely looking forward to the Rumble match. I wasn’t in it the past two years. I won in 2006. In 2007, I was injured, and in 2008 I wrestled Edge. I’m very much looking forward to being in there again. Besides that, we have the John Cena versus JBL match, and I think that’s going to be a very interesting match. I want to see what’s going to happen with Shawn Michaels, if he’s being asked to interfere during that match or not. I want to see what he would do. And we also have Jeff Hardy wrestling Edge on the card.
